(FT) Flash Technique for Trauma
(For children, young people and adults)

I was trained by Dr. Phil Manfield.
The flash technique (FT) is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention for reducing disturbances associated with traumatic or other distressing memories.

This minimally intrusive technique doesn't not require the client to consciously engage with the traumatic memory. This enables processing the traumatic memories without feeling any distress.

Originally developed as an addition to the preparation stage for EMDR, FT is effective in reducing the disturbance levels of painful memories.

It can help to desensitise the following traumatic experiences:
-
Sexual abuse
-
Combat
-
Suicide attempt
-
Past bullying
-
Victims of Violence
-
Car accidents
-
Near death experiences
-
Attacks or robbery
-
Being trapped
-
Depression
-
Birth Trauma
-
Phobias
-
Physical and mental abuse
-
Panic attacks
-
Fire
-
Terrorism
-
Natural disasters
-
Genocide
-
Life threatening experiences (medical)
-
Disability from surgery or accident

Hearing about a traumatic experience or imagining what happened

this list is not exhaustive
When we experience trauma it usually results in strong emotions which overwhelm our brain. This overwhelm stops our brain processing normally so it leaves the memory unprocessed. Normally an experience would go through a part of our brain called the hippocampus. This part of the brain processes the experience so it can be filed away as a memory. If this doesn’t happen the experience gets stuck in the nervous system. The stuck memory can get triggered and is experienced as if it is happening in the present, with all the emotions and sensations that go with it.

(FT) offers a way of stopping the involuntary recall by filing the traumatic event in the long term memory, so it becomes under control.

Working with an unresolved traumatic memory or target memory, the technique turns attention to a positive and engaging image, activity, piece of music or visualisation. Whilst focusing on this distraction, this momentarily interrupt the focus.
(FT) is non-intrusive, there is no need for individuals to verbalise specific details of the event/events that have traumatised them. This helps avoid embedding the trauma further and re-traumatisation.

During the assessment we will explore emotional regulation and stabilisation, prior to undertaking the rewind.
